Why Costa Rica Can Be Better for a Destination Wedding (vs. Mexico)
Natural scenery & variety Costa Rica offers rainforests, volcanoes, waterfalls, and unspoiled beaches. The diversity of landscapes means you can have both lush greenery and dramatic coastlines in one trip.
Public beaches (vs. Mexico’s private resorts) In Costa Rica, nearly all beaches are public by law, which means you’re not restricted to resort-controlled spaces. This gives you more freedom to choose a wedding backdrop that feels natural and secluded.
In Mexico, many beachfronts are tied to private resorts or restricted access areas, so your options can be more limited or tied to a resort package. This means that if you have guests that do not stay at the resort they may have to pay a day pass and parking to come to the beach.
Eco-tourism & adventure activities Guests can zip-line through rainforests, hike volcanoes, surf, or spot wildlife. The wedding trip doubles as an eco-friendly adventure vacation.
All-inclusive yet boutique options Costa Rica has excellent all-inclusive wedding packages, but it also offers boutique eco-lodges and private villas, giving you more unique options beyond the resort model.
Experienced destination-wedding support Local planners and venues are accustomed to international weddings, making logistics smoother for both legal and symbolic ceremonies.
More exclusivity Mexico’s wedding market is more saturated, especially in Cancun and Riviera Maya. Costa Rica offers more intimate and less crowded settings if you’re aiming for a distinctive, non-cookie-cutter experience. If you want freedom of beach access, a dramatic natural backdrop, eco-adventure, and a more unique wedding vibe, Costa Rica pulls ahead. If ease of travel, and big-resort infrastructure matter more, Mexico may be better.
Why Pick Guanacaste for a Destination Wedding (vs. Central Pacific)
1. Convenient access
Liberia International Airport is right in the region, cutting down long transfers. Only being 1.25 hours from the airport, we're in an ideal location. Other areas in Guanacaste range up to 3 hours away. If selecting the Central Pacific areas (Manuel Antonio, Uvita) you are flying into San Jose and the drive is 3-4 hours, making it a strain for a week or less stay.
Strong infrastructure: wide range of hotels, resorts, and transport services.
2. Weather reliability
Guanacaste has the driest climate in Costa Rica.
Peak wedding months (Dec–Apr) are especially dependable, with little rain risk. Don't worry if you are looking May-July though, the rain is very little and typically between 3:30 to 4pm and then occasionally after 9pm. There are a few days it will rain more, but these months are very relaxed on rain. It will be more vibrantly green between May-July and not as hot as months like March which can get to 100 degrees
3. Beautiful, diverse beaches
White and golden sands, calm bays, lively surf towns, or secluded coves.
Nearly all beaches are public, giving you more freedom for ceremonies.
4. Luxury + service options
Fantastic service between resorts and boutique eco-lodges with planners, catering, and staff experienced in destination weddings.
5. Less bugs & humidity
Guanacaste’s drier climate means fewer mosquitoes and biting insects, especially compared to the humid, jungle-dense southern regions.
This makes outdoor ceremonies, sunset dinners, and beach parties more comfortable for guests.
6. Balance of adventure & relaxation
Guests can enjoy zip-lining, surfing, snorkeling, or simply relax in resort luxury.
7. Well-developed vendor network
Caterers, florists, planners, and photographers are plentiful and accustomed to international weddings.
What You Get Further South (Central & South Pacific)
More rainforest immersion & wildlife (denser jungles, more monkeys, toucans, sloths).
Seclusion & authenticity (smaller boutique venues, less “touristy” feel).
More bugs & humidity (mosquitoes and no-see-ums are common in lush jungle settings).
Less accessibility (longer drives from airports, fewer resort options).
If you want guest comfort, fewer bugs, reliable weather, and easy logistics without giving up Costa Rica’s beauty, Guanacaste is the safer choice. If you prioritize raw jungle immersion and a wilder, off-the-beaten-path vibe, further south may be worth it—bugs and travel time included.
